Step 1: Finish Your Manuscript
Before anything else, your manuscript needs to be complete. Publishers and self-publishing services will not start work on an incomplete book. Aim for a clean first draft — it does not have to be perfect, but it should be complete from first page to last. For fiction, most novels run 50,000-80,000 words. Non-fiction books range from 30,000-60,000 words. Poetry collections can be shorter. Save your manuscript as a Word document (.docx) — this is the standard format every publisher in India accepts.
Step 2: Choose Your Publishing Path

Get a written quote that covers everything: editing, design, printing, ISBN, and distribution. Avoid publishers who ask for money upfront without a detailed breakdown. Step 5: Distribution and Beyond
Your publisher should list your book on Amazon India and Flipkart at minimum. Physical bookstore distribution depends on your genre, audience, and the publisher's network.
