Publishing Guide

How to Publish a Book in India

A practical, no-nonsense guide to getting your book published in India — from manuscript to bookstore shelves. Updated for 2026.

Step 1: Finish Your Manuscript

Before anything else, your manuscript needs to be complete. Publishers and self-publishing services will not start work on an incomplete book. Aim for a clean first draft — it does not have to be perfect, but it should be complete from first page to last. For fiction, most novels run 50,000-80,000 words. Non-fiction books range from 30,000-60,000 words. Poetry collections can be shorter. Save your manuscript as a Word document (.docx) — this is the standard format every publisher in India accepts.

Step 2: Choose Your Publishing Path

In India, you have three main options. Traditional publishing means submitting your manuscript to publishers who accept it based on merit, cover all costs, and pay you royalties (typically 7-10% of cover price). This is competitive — most publishers reject 95%+ of submissions. Self-publishing means you pay a publishing service to produce your book. You control the process and keep higher royalties (50-70%), but you bear the upfront cost (Rs 15,000-1,00,000+). Hybrid publishing sits in between — the publisher invests in some costs and you share the rest. For most first-time authors in India, self-publishing through a reputable publisher is the most practical path.

Step 3: Select a Publisher

Research thoroughly before committing. Look for publishers with a verifiable track record — how many books have they published? Can you see them on Amazon? Talk to their past authors if possible. Get a written quote that covers everything: editing, design, printing, ISBN, and distribution. Avoid publishers who ask for money upfront without a detailed breakdown. At Sapatrishi Publications, we have published over 1,000 titles since 1992, and we provide a written quote before any work begins.

Step 4: Editing, Design, and Production

A professional publisher will handle editing (copy editing and proofreading at minimum), cover design (front, spine, back), interior layout and typesetting, ISBN registration and barcode, and printing. This process typically takes 4-8 weeks from approved manuscript to printed copies. Do not skip editing — even experienced writers need a professional editor. The cover design is crucial for sales, especially online where the thumbnail is the first thing buyers see.

Step 5: Distribution and Beyond

Your publisher should list your book on Amazon India and Flipkart at minimum. Physical bookstore distribution depends on your genre, audience, and the publisher's network. Be realistic: most self-published books in India sell 100-500 copies, primarily through the author's own network. Post-publication, your job is marketing — social media, book readings, local events, and word of mouth. The publisher prints and distributes; you create the demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to publish a book in India?

Self-publishing costs range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 1,00,000+ depending on the publisher, page count, print quality, and number of copies. At Sapatrishi, our packages start from Rs 15,000 and include editing, design, printing, ISBN, and distribution.

How long does it take to publish a book?

From finished manuscript to printed copies, expect 4-8 weeks with a good publisher. This includes editing (2-3 weeks), design and layout (1-2 weeks), and printing (1-2 weeks). Add time if your manuscript needs significant editing.

Do I need to be in the same city as my publisher?

No. Most of the publishing process can be handled remotely via email and phone. At Sapatrishi, many of our 700+ authors are from across India. That said, having a local publisher you can visit is a significant advantage for first-time authors.

Can I publish in Hindi or Punjabi?

Yes. Many Indian publishers handle regional languages. At Sapatrishi, we publish in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Sanskrit with in-house typesetting for Devanagari, Gurmukhi, and Nastaliq scripts.
