Publishing Guide

How to Choose the Right Publisher in India

Not all publishers are equal. Here is how to find a trustworthy publisher and avoid the ones that will waste your time and money.

Red Flags to Watch For

The Indian self-publishing market has grown rapidly, and unfortunately, so have the number of publishers who over-promise and under-deliver. Watch for these red flags: Publishers who guarantee bestseller status or specific sales numbers (nobody can guarantee this). Packages with vague descriptions and no detailed breakdowns. Pressure to sign immediately or pay upfront before seeing a written quote. No verifiable track record — if you cannot find their books on Amazon, that is a problem. Bad or no reviews from past authors. And publishers who seem more interested in selling you expensive add-ons than in understanding your book.

What to Look for in a Good Publisher

A trustworthy publisher should have a verifiable catalogue of published books that you can find on Amazon and in bookstores. They should provide a detailed, written quote before any payment. They should be transparent about timelines, what is included, and what costs extra. They should have a physical office you can visit (or at minimum, a verifiable business address). They should be willing to connect you with past authors for references. And they should ask about your book — a publisher who does not ask about your manuscript is not interested in your book, just your money.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

How many books have you published? Can I see them on Amazon? What exactly is included in the package — editing, cover design, interior layout, ISBN, printing, distribution? How many copies do I get? What is the timeline from manuscript to printed book? Who owns the rights to the book after publication? What are the royalty terms for online sales? Are there any additional costs that are not in the initial quote? Can I speak with one or two of your past authors? At Sapatrishi, we welcome all of these questions and are happy to share references from our 700+ published authors.

Contracts and Rights

Read your contract carefully before signing. Key things to verify: You retain copyright and intellectual property rights. The publisher has non-exclusive distribution rights (not exclusive — you should be able to distribute your own copies). There are no clauses that lock you in for multiple years or prevent you from republishing elsewhere. The number of complimentary copies is clearly stated. Royalty percentages and payment schedules are specified. If anything is unclear, ask for clarification in writing. A good publisher will not be offended by questions about the contract.

Local vs Online Publishers

Both can work well, but they offer different experiences. A local publisher (like Sapatrishi in Chandigarh) allows you to visit the office, meet the team, and see the printing process. This is especially valuable for first-time authors and for complex projects (regional languages, image-heavy books). An online-only publisher can be convenient if you are comfortable managing everything through email and dashboards. The key factor is not local vs online — it is trustworthiness, track record, and the quality of their published books.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose the cheapest publisher?

Not necessarily. The cheapest option often means corners are cut — in editing quality, cover design, or print quality. Compare what is included at each price point. A Rs 15,000 package that includes professional editing and custom cover design is better value than a Rs 8,000 package that offers only basic formatting and a template cover.

How do I verify a publisher's track record?

Search for their books on Amazon India. Check the quality of covers and descriptions. Read author reviews on Google and social media. Ask the publisher for 2-3 author references and actually call them. A publisher with 100+ books on Amazon with decent covers is likely legitimate.

Is it safe to pay the full amount upfront?

We recommend a payment structure where you pay a portion upfront (30-50%) and the balance on delivery or at milestone stages (after editing, after design, after printing). Most reputable publishers, including Sapatrishi, offer staged payment options.
