Book Printing in India

Offset, digital, print-on-demand — what is the right printing method for your book? A practical guide to paper, binding, costs, and quality.

Offset Printing: The Traditional Standard

Offset printing uses metal plates to transfer ink onto paper. It is the standard for professional book production worldwide. The quality is excellent — sharp text, consistent colors, and smooth finishes. The economics favor volume: per-copy costs drop significantly at 200+ copies. A typical 200-page paperback costs Rs 30-50 per copy at 500 copies, and Rs 20-35 per copy at 1,000+ copies. The minimum order for offset is usually 100-500 copies depending on the printer. Setup costs (plate-making) make it uneconomical for runs under 100. At Sapatrishi, we use offset printing for most of our books because it delivers the best quality at the best price for standard print runs.

Digital Printing: Small Runs, Quick Turnaround

Digital printing works like a high-end laser printer — no plates needed. It is ideal for runs of 10-200 copies. The per-copy cost is higher than offset (Rs 80-150 for a 200-page paperback), but there are no setup costs. Turnaround is faster — typically 3-5 days versus 7-14 days for offset. Digital printing quality has improved dramatically and is now nearly indistinguishable from offset for text-only books. For image-heavy books (photography, art, children's books), offset still produces noticeably better results.

Paper Types and GSM

GSM (grams per square meter) indicates paper thickness. For book interiors, 60-80 GSM is standard — 70 GSM is the most common choice, offering good opacity and a comfortable feel. Premium books use 80-90 GSM. For covers, 250-300 GSM art card with lamination (glossy or matte) is standard. Matte lamination gives a modern, sophisticated feel; glossy works better for colorful, image-driven covers. Paper color matters too — natural/cream (also called antique) paper reduces eye strain for fiction and long reads, while white paper is preferred for non-fiction, textbooks, and books with photographs.

Binding Options

Perfect binding (glued spine, paperback) is the most common and affordable option for books over 60 pages. Saddle stitching (stapled) works for thin booklets under 60 pages. Case binding (hardcover) adds Rs 30-80 per copy to the cost but creates a premium product. Section sewing (where signatures are stitched before the cover is attached) is the most durable binding — used for books that will be read repeatedly (textbooks, religious texts). Your choice of binding should match your book's purpose, audience, and price point.

Getting the Best Results

Provide your printer with a PDF/X-1a file (the print industry standard). Ensure images are 300 DPI at print size — images that look fine on screen often print blurry if they are low resolution. Request a physical proof (a single printed copy for review) before approving the full run. Check margins, text alignment, image quality, and color accuracy. At Sapatrishi, we always send a proof PDF and can arrange a physical proof copy before the final print run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum number of copies I can print?

With digital printing, you can print as few as 10 copies. Offset printing typically requires a minimum of 100-500 copies. Print-on-demand services allow single-copy orders but at a higher per-copy cost. At Sapatrishi, we offer digital printing from 10 copies and offset from 100 copies.

How do I choose between matte and glossy cover lamination?

Matte gives a soft, modern feel and resists fingerprints — preferred for literary fiction, non-fiction, and minimalist designs. Glossy makes colors pop and gives a high-energy feel — preferred for children's books, cookbooks, and commercial fiction with vibrant cover art. When in doubt, matte is the safer choice.

Can I print a hardcover book in India?

Yes. Hardcover (case binding) is available from most offset printers in India. It adds Rs 30-80 per copy to the cost. Many authors print a small hardcover run for gifts, libraries, and premium sales alongside a larger paperback run for general distribution.
